Our London hometown is a constant source of ideas and inspiration, and its distinctive streets and iconic landmarks appear often in our prints. Our collaboration with Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” inspired us to look at London through fresh eyes, creating a new scenic, storytelling print woven with Disney’s original illustrations and our own trademark print motifs: Townhouse Dogs. Watch the print come to life in an exclusive film that includes new Disney animations created especially for us!
When it came to creating the collection, Disney’s 1961 classic “101 Dalmatians” animation was a rich source of ideas for our designers. We fell in love with the movie’s beautifully stylized artwork, bold colour palette, modern retro feel – it was the first Disney movie to have a contemporary, 1960s setting – and above all its charming characters. Certain sequences from the movie are especially memorable and fun, so we looked for ways to reimagine them in print.
In one favourite scene Dalmatian Pongo, despairing of his human “pet” Rodger’s inability to find a mate, gazes from the window of their London home on the lookout for a suitable lady. He assesses various dogs and their owners walking past on their way to Regent’s Park before eventually glimpsing Anita and her Dalmatian Perdita: the perfect match! This playful sequence, with its characterful illustrations of dogs and their amusingly similar owners, was the starting point for Townhouse Dogs print. Besides Rodger, Anita, Pongo, Perdita and some of their pups, the print stars Afghan hounds, spaniels, pugs, puppies and their human counterparts.
Look closely and you’ll see we’ve given Disney’s original character illustrations a fun Cath Kidston twist – though they’re coloured in subtle shades of grey, the owners are dressed in our spot, stripe and floral prints. We’ve also put our stamp on the backdrop. Looking through our library of London designs we found AW14’s Townhouses print, which features expressive sketches of the colourful Notting Hill townhouses near our HQ. We chose the townhouses from our print that fit best with the original movie artwork and reworked them in soft greyscale. Our London streetscapes are blended with some of Disney’s own scenic artwork, so the characters look perfectly at home. The print is finished with a feminine, unmistakably Cath Kidston flourish – bold, over-sized pink roses with fresh green leaves, which add pops of vivid Technicolor to the otherwise monochrome palette.
This unique, sophisticated print is full of charm, personality and beautiful detail, cleverly blending Disney’s characters with our florals and London scenes.
